In Russia, Novaya Gazeta server disabled

We issued the following statement today in response to sustained distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on the server hosting the Web version of the independent Moscow-based newspaper Novaya Gazeta; the Web site has been disabled since January 26 according to newspaper staff who spoke with CPJ...

“We are deeply dismayed by the ongoing hackers’ attacks on Novaya Gazeta’s Web site, which have left thousands of readers, both in Russia and abroad, without access to their favorite newspaper,” said CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova. “We call on Department K under Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs to immediately investigate these attacks, bring their perpetrators to justice, and restore the functionality of Novaya Gazeta’s server.”
