{Law 88 for the Protection of Cuba's National Independence and Economy }
Background
The National Assembly passed Law 88 for the Protection of Cuba’s
National Independence and Economy (Ley 88 de Protección
de la Independencia Nacional y la Economía de Cuba) in
February 1999. It is the implementing legislation for the Law
of Reaffirmation of Cuba’s Dignity and Sovereignty (Ley
de Reafirmación de la Dignidad y Soberanía Cubanas),
which was approved in December 1996 in response to the U.S.
Helms-Burton Law.
