ATTACKED

Unidentified individuals fired several gunshots at the offices of local Radio Marabina on the night of July 16 in Maracaibo, 439 miles (706 kilometers) west of Caracas, said the station's director Sorcire Rodríguez. No one was injured.

New York, August 20, 2008Military personnel and officials from the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) shut down two radio stations in the central Guárico province Monday night. New York, June 16, 2008—Javier García, news anchor for the Caracas-based television station Radio Caracas Television Internacional (RCTV), was found dead in his Caracas apartment on Sunday. The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on local authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into García’s death.

New York, June 3, 2008—Unidentified gunmen killed Pierre Fould Gerges, vice president of the Caracas daily Reporte Diario de la Economía, on Monday following dozens of death threats against the paper’s senior administrative staff over the last year. The Committee to Protect Journalists said today that Venezuelan authorities must conduct a thorough investigation and determine whether Gerges’ killing was linked to his newspaper’s work.

New York, May 20, 2008—The Committee to Protect Journalists welcomes Monday’s conviction by a Venezuelan court of former police officer Boris Blanco for the 2006 murder of photojournalist Jorge Aguirre.

New York, February 12, 2008—A group of Venezuelan legislators urged the Attorney General’s Office yesterday to investigate private television station Globovisión, alleging the broadcaster is damaging the image of President Hugo Chávez Frías.

Led by Deputy Juan Carlos Dugarte, from the official Movimiento Quinta República party, a group of lawmakers and government supporters gave a petition to Attorney General Luisa Ortega Díaz asking her to investigate Globovisión, a station with strong opposition views, the local press reported.

In August 2008, when the Olympic torch is lit in Beijing, more than 20,000 journalists will be on hand to cover the competition between the world's greatest athletes. Behind the scenes, another competition will be taking place. If the Chinese government has its way, this one will remain hidden. It will be a battle over information, and it will have far greater implications for the world than the medal count.
