La Voie, CENSORED
Police seized copies of the independent opposition daily La Voie from newsstands when it reappeared in defiance of a three-month suspension otder issued in December 1995. The paper was suspended for allegedly defaming President Henri Konan Bédié. Defense attorneys for La Voie justified the paper's premature return on the grounds that neither the newspaper nor its printers had been served with a formal court order. CPJ wrote to President Bédié and urged him to lift the ban on La Voie. On Jan. 3, the newspaper, which is an organ of the opposition Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), began publishing under a new name, L'Alternative. In April 1996, when the ban was lifted, it resumed publishing under its original name.
