January 26
Samuel Derrick, Daily Observer, LEGAL ACTION
Winston Derrick, Daily Observer, LEGAL ACTION
Robert Potter, Daily Observer, LEGAL ACTION
Samuel Derrick, publisher of the Daily Observer, Winston Derrick, the newspaper's editor, and Potter, a salesman for the daily, were charged with "printing and distribution of a false statement concerning the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, which is likely to undermine public confidence in the conduct of public affairs." The criminal charges were brought by a government official and stemmed from an article published on Jan. 19 that dealt with the alleged detention of a person employed by Prime Minister Lester Bird. On Feb. 8, one day after CPJ and other press freedom organizations wrote to the Antiguan government protesting the charges, the prosecution withdrew them, and the case was dismissed.
