UZBEKISTAN

Killed

February 8
Sergei Grebenyuk, Interfax, KILLED
Grebenyuk, a reporter for the independent Russian news agency Interfax, was found dead in a canal in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent. CPJ has received conflicting reports regarding the circumstances under which he died, and the Uzbek Interior Ministry said that the exact cause of death is unknown. Grebenyuk was last seen alive on Jan. 27 at his brother's home, near where his body was later found. Both independent observers and government spokesmen said the murder was not politically motivated and was unrelated to Grebenyuk's journalistic activities, but Russian correspondents working in Tashkent who themselves had been the victims of anonymous threats claimed that Grebenyuk had received warnings and had been previously attacked. CPJ is continuing to look into the case and wrote to President Islam Karimov, urging him to order a thorough investigation into Grebenyuk's death.
