A Tunisian blogger speaks out: ‘The candles are lit’

My country’s government brags unabashedly that it has not passed any laws that require government authorization to establish an electronic publication or a Web site or a blog on the Internet. Those that cheerlead for this government rely on this point to propagate the lie they call “the freedom to publish electronically” in Tunisia.

Those individuals purposely ignore more significant facts, and neglect to mention that to publish on the Internet—if you do so freely—presents the fastest route to a detention camp in Tunisia, or at the very least is bound to result in police surveillance on the streets and the release of inflated muscles with the task of beating you senseless, lest you believe again the lie of the freedom to publish electronically.

I would be ashamed of myself if I brought up this topic and neglected to mention the name of the martyr of electronic free expression in Tunisia, the immortal Zouhair Yahyaoui, the most famous writer and blogger who was incarcerated for an honest post and a truthful word to benefit the people. Zouhair was led to the detention camp and then to the grave. But he was never led to obscurity and never will in spite all attempts to annihilate his memory.

The latest round of repression initiated by the Tunisian government against numerous blogs via blocking and electronic sabotage comes ahead of what the government terms “transparent and fair” presidential and parliamentary elections. The latest act of sabotage, the piracy and destruction of Mokhtar Yahyaoui’s blog, was preceded by a similar attack on my blog and many others, as well as the Facebook pages belonging to many online writers. Such was the case of the journalist and writer Slim Baqa, when the hidden hands of the government hijacked control of his page and turned it into a forum for criticizing bloggers. All these actions have come to remove the façade and reveal the true nature of my country’s government which is an enemy of free expression, a hunter of those who wish to freely publish and exchange information.

Let me give another example: The government released on July 23, 2007 the attorney and online writer Mohamed Abbou. But then look how it proceeded: It instituted shadowlike police surveillance and prevented him from traveling abroad on seven consecutive occasions, and unleashed its hired guns in an effort to malign him and his wife. More importantly, it ordered its Internet police to obliterate his Facebook page and to infiltrate his electronic mail account.

Alongside the sabotaging of blogs belonging to opposition bloggers and online writers, the government also deploys other weapons. Forget not what afflicts the independent journalist Abballah Zouari, who endures repeated harassment at the hands of the police.

Blocking and filtering a large number of Web sites and blogs is another nasty tactic employed by the Tunisian government for years now. The government supplements that with other means of settling scores with critical journalists and online writers through the fabrication of judicial proceedings against them or through attacking their family members, as has been the case with the courageous and renowned journalist Neziha Rjiba.

This dim and repetitive picture has existed in Tunisia for years: Pens unleash their ink in expression, while the government disavows its constitution to sever any pen that writes in opposition. But no matter how authoritarian or haughty or savage the censors might get, candles remain lit, stars are aglow, and palm trees refuse to bow down.
