CENSORED

A station of the prominent Mogadishu-based HornAfrik Radio in the southern town of Kismayo returned to the air after the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) shuttered it for 4 days, according to international reporting and local journalists.

The radio received a set of guidelines against playing love songs and airing reporting critical of the UIC, Ahmed Abdisalam, one of HornAfrik’s managing partners, told CPJ. The radio did not agree to these conditions and would maintain its editorial ndependence, according to him. However, other local sources said content had changed and that critical news coverage was much more difficult.

Islamist authorities shut down HornAfrik and questioned three of its journalists after the station covered anti-UIC demonstrations in Kismayo.
