Iran's press record needs scrutiny at U.N. General Assembly

New York, September 9, 2014--The Committee to Protect Journalists is dismayed that dozens of journalists remain imprisoned in Iran more than a year after the inauguration of President Hassan Rouhani, who has pledged to seek more constructive engagement with the international community. CPJ calls on attendees of this month's U.N. General Assembly to urge Rouhani to ensure the release of all journalists imprisoned for their work.

In Iran, more abuse of unjustly imprisoned journalists

New York, June 7, 2011--Iranian authorities continue to punish unjustly imprisoned journalists when they demand basic rights. They also retaliate when these journalists speak out about their mistreatment and the substandard conditions in prison, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.

Iran arrests four journalists; dozens deteriorating in prison

New York, December 7, 2010--The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns today's arrest of four Iranian journalists at the daily Sharq. CPJ is also disturbed by recent news reports that indicate the abusive treatment endured by dozens of imprisoned Iranian prisoners has adversely affected the health of many of them--including Issa Saharkhiz, at left, a founding member of the now-defunct Association of Iranian Journalists, who has reportedly undergone surgery for internal hemorrhaging at Rajaee Shahr Prison.
