CPJ Safety Advisory: The Mosul offensive and psychological injury

The military campaign to retake the Iraqi city of Mosul from the Islamic State (IS) group, known as the Mosul offensive, has resumed with Iraqi forces engaged in a second phase attempting to take further neighborhoods in eastern parts of the city. A number of journalists, freelancers and staffers, remain in Northern Iraq and travel up to the frontlines daily. The Emergencies Response Team (ERT) at the Committee to Protect Journalists has issued the following advisory for journalists covering or planning to cover the Mosul offensive.

Ali Risan

Ali Risan, a cameraman for the Iraqi Al-Sumaria TV channel, was killed while covering clashes between Iraqi security forces and Islamic State fighters on October 22, 2016, according to his outlet and news reports. His killing came as Iraqi and Kurdish security forces launched a joint offensive to reclaim the city of Mosul from control of the Islamic State group.

Gunmen kill Iraqi journalist near his home in Mosul

New York, October 25, 2013--Iraqi authorities must immediately identify the motive behind the killing of another journalist in the northern city of Mosul and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today. At least two other Iraqi journalists have been killed in Mosul this month.

Two Iraqi journalists shot dead in Mosul

New York, October 7, 2013--Two Iraqi journalists were shot dead by unidentified assailants in the city of Mosul on Saturday, according to news reports. The Committee to Protect Journalists condemns the killing and calls on the Iraqi government to ensure the perpetrators are held to account.
